Independence in true sense

Do we truly possess independence? This is the question I would like to pose to every citizen of India. Currently, we are limited by our own narrow-minded thoughts. We use foul language, spit wherever we please, litter the streets, and flout all types of rules, whether they pertain to traffic, society, or any other area.

As Indians and as individuals, we are fostering egotism, envy, and jealousy towards anyone we come across in our environment. The troubling part is that we are consciously or unconsciously imparting these qualities to our children. How can society change for the better?

Corruption has become commonplace, both within people's minds and in society as a whole. If you want to purchase a house, you must pay a bribe to the registrar. If you need an extra gas cylinder, bribe someone to get it delivered to your home. If you break a traffic signal, bribe the traffic police. If you require a domicile certificate, bribe the officials and have it delivered to your doorstep. If your pollution certificate has expired, bribe the police to get it renewed. This list goes on and on...

What's worse is that all of this takes place under the watchful eye of Gandhi's poster, and a large poster stating that the department is bribe-free.

These issues are not related to the government, but rather to individuals. All of these harmful thoughts are eroding our humanity.

What drives us to engage in such malicious acts? I believe that these are inherent problems with human nature. The three detrimental emotions - "greed," "hatred," and "delusion" - are the culprits, providing fuel for the fire. These metaphors highlight how destructive afflictive thoughts and emotions can be when they are not properly understood and transformed.

Greed is an insatiable desire that creates an unquenchable thirst for unattainable goals. We mistakenly believe that once we achieve these goals, we will find lasting satisfaction. However, we often find that we remain unsatisfied.

Hatred is the most harmful emotion in human nature. It is anger, aggression, dislike, and aversion. We tend to resist, deny, and avoid unpleasant feelings, circumstances, and people we do not like. We want everything to be pleasant, comfortable, and satisfying all the time. This behavior only reinforces our perception of duality and separation. Hatred or anger plunges us into a vicious cycle of always finding conflict and enemies everywhere around us.

Delusion is another dangerous emotion, as harmful as poison. Delusion is our wrong understanding or wrong views of reality. It is our misperception of the way the world works, our inability to understand the nature of things as they are, free of perceptual distortions. If we are influenced by delusion, we are not in harmony with ourselves, others, or with life.

For countless eons, we have been driven by our greed, hatred, and delusion.

Although I know that the cure for the three poisons is to cultivate selflessness, generosity, detachment, contentment, loving-kindness, compassion, patience, forgiveness, wisdom, insight, and right understanding, it seems that these are not so easy to practice.

I am not sure what the remedy is that can work on the masses and help every individual achieve true independence.

All the best!

  1. True to the core. But v are Indians we get used to things and become part of the core committee. There are few ppl who actually come out in public or have the guts to take this up. But again those voices are silenced temporarily or permanently. It is yet another invasion that we are in the only difference the pre 1947 invasion was VIDESHI and the post 1947 is SWADESHI.
